In Albanien gab es wohl eine Tradition, bei der bestimmte Frauen als Männer gelebt haben:
Albanian sworn virgins (Albanian: burrnesha or virgjinesha) are women who take a vow of chastity and wear male clothing in order to live as men in the patriarchal northern Albanian society

The tradition of sworn virgins developed out of the Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit (English: The Code of Lekë Dukagjini, or simply the Kanun),[5] a set of codes and laws developed by Lekë Dukagjini and used mostly in northern Albania and Kosovo from the 15th century until the 20th century. The Kanun is not a religious document – many groups follow it including Roman Catholic, Albanian Orthodox, and Muslims.[6] The Kanun dictates that families must be patrilineal (meaning wealth is inherited through a family’s men) and patrilocal (upon marriage, a woman moves into the household of her husband’s family).[7] Women are treated like property of the family. Under the Kanun women are stripped of many human rights. They cannot smoke, wear a watch, or vote in their local elections. They cannot buy land, and there are many jobs they are not permitted to hold. There are even establishments that they cannot enter.[4][6] The practice of sworn virginhood was first reported by missionaries, travellers, geographers and anthropologists who visited the mountains of northern Albania in the 19th and early 20th centuries
A woman becomes a sworn virgin by swearing an irrevocable oath, in front of 12 village or tribal elders, to practice celibacy. Then she is allowed to live as a man. She will then be able to dress in male clothes, use a male name, carry a gun, smoke, drink alcohol, take on male work, act as the head of a household (for example, living with a sister or mother), play music and sing, and sit and talk socially with men.[4][8][9] A woman can become a sworn virgin at any age, either to satisfy her parents or herself.
Dieser Brauch wurde mir in Diskussionen von Vertretern der Genderseite schon häufiger entgegen gehalten. Dabei ist der Aussagegehalt relativ gering. Die Praxis wurde trotz sehr schlechter Umstände für Frauen nie von vielen Frauen umgesetzt und blieb die Ausnahme. Es fehlen alle Angaben dazu, wie stark die Frauen tatsächlich in die Männerrolle gewechselt sind oder ob sie nur bestimmte Tätigkeiten übernommen haben, es fehlt an Angaben, wie sie sich dabei gefühlt haben und ob es ihnen leicht fiel. Und vor allem wird hier in keiner Weise geprüft, ob biologische Faktoren auch hier eine Rolle spielen.

There are many reasons why a woman would have wanted to take this vow, and observers have recorded a variety of motivations. One woman said she became a sworn virgin in order to not be separated from her father, and another in order to live and work with her sister. Several were recorded as saying they always felt more male than female. Some hoped to avoid a specific unwanted marriage, and others hoped to avoid marriage in general.
Wenn ein Kind sich schon immer mehr als ein Mitglied des anderen Geschlechts fühlt, dann liegt es nahe, dass es einen gewissen Zusammenhang mit Transsexualität gibt. Und bei dieser ist ein biologischer Zusammenhang gut nachgewiesen. Oder es handelt sich bereits vorher um relativ männliche Frauen, z.B. in Richtung der Tomboys, etwa aufgrund eines sehr hohen pränatalen und auch postnatalen Testosteronspiegels.
Diana Rakipi, eine Burrnesha, führt dazu aus:
“I grew up playing with boys. Since I was a kid I was always surrounded by men, I always preferred their company to girls. My brother died before I was born. My mother would always say to me, ‘you are just like him’. So it was always expected I would kind of just take his place,”
Sie spielte schon immer mit den Jungs, sie war lieber in der Gesellschaft von Jungs, sie war genau wie ihr Bruder. Das klingt nicht nach einem Rollenwechsel, sondern eher danach, dass sie schon immer eher männlich war.
Zudem scheint sich diese Tradition nicht gehalten zu haben, obwohl das Patriarchat ja nach wie vor den Männern genug Vorteile bietet.
The tradition of sworn virgins was never that common in Albania, and the practice is slowly dying out. Today there are so many more opportunities for young women that most of them here have not even heard of the practice, let alone considered it an option.
Die Praxis scheint also nicht sehr attraktiv gewesen zu sein. Sofern nicht mehr der Druck enormer gesellschaftlicher Zustände bestand scheint dieser Weg die männlichen Vorteile zu erlangen nicht mehr attraktiv für die allermeisten Frauen gewesen zu sein.
